Power Outage

Is it a blackout or a problem in your home?

The first thing to work out when your power goes off is whether it is a wider blackout or a fault inside your own home. Quick checks: look outside, are your neighbours houses dark too, and are the streetlights off? If the whole area is out, it is a network blackout and you should check your electricity distributor outage page or hotline. If only your home has lost power while the street still has it, the problem is on your side, at your switchboard, your wiring or an appliance, and that is where a licensed electrician comes in. Knowing which it is saves you time and tells you who to call.

What to do during a power outage

When the power goes out, a few steps keep you safe and make restoration smoother:

  • Turn off and unplug sensitive appliances and electronics to protect them from a surge when power returns
  • Leave one light switched on so you know when power comes back
  • Keep fridges and freezers closed to preserve food
  • Check your switchboard for a tripped safety switch or breaker
  • Avoid candles where possible; use torches to reduce fire risk

If it is a network blackout, wait for the distributor. If only your home is affected, check your switchboard, and if that does not restore it, call an electrician.

Common causes of a power outage in your home

When only your home loses power, the usual causes are a tripped safety switch (RCD) responding to an earth-leakage fault, a tripped circuit breaker from an overload or short circuit, a blown ceramic fuse in an older board, a faulty appliance dragging the circuit down, or a genuine wiring fault. Sometimes the main switch itself or the supply connection is the issue. Partial outages, where some rooms work and others do not, usually point to a single tripped circuit. A total loss on your side can be the main switch, a main safety switch, or a supply problem. We trace the cause methodically rather than guessing.

Tripped safety switch or circuit breaker

The most common reason part or all of your home loses power is a tripped safety switch or circuit breaker at the switchboard. A circuit breaker trips on overload or short circuit and protects the wiring; reset it once, and if it trips again, there is a fault that needs finding. A safety switch trips on earth leakage to protect you from shock; if it will not stay reset, it is detecting a genuine fault, often a faulty appliance or moisture. Repeatedly resetting a device that keeps tripping is not the answer, it is protecting you from something. We find and fix the underlying fault so power is restored safely.

Partial power outage: some rooms have power

If some lights or outlets work while others are dead, you have a partial outage, which almost always means one circuit has tripped or failed while the rest of the board is fine. Check your switchboard for a breaker or safety switch that has flipped to off, and try resetting it once. If it trips straight back, or if there is no obviously tripped switch but a section of the home is still dead, there is a fault on that circuit, a faulty appliance, a damaged cable, a failed connection or an outlet problem. We isolate and test the affected circuit to find exactly what is causing it, then repair it.

Total power outage on your side of the meter

If your whole home is dark but the street has power, the fault is on your side of the meter. Possible causes include a tripped main switch or main safety switch, a failed main connection, a problem at the meter box or switchboard, or a serious wiring fault. This is not something to troubleshoot beyond checking whether the main switch or a main safety switch has tripped, because the main supply is involved. If resetting the main switch does not restore power, or it trips again, call a licensed electrician. We will safely diagnose the supply, meter box and switchboard to find and fix the cause.

Why your safety switch keeps tripping

A safety switch that keeps cutting your power is doing its job, detecting electricity leaking to earth, which could otherwise cause a fatal shock. The cause is usually a faulty appliance, a damaged cord or plug, moisture in an outlet or fitting, or deteriorating wiring. The way to find it is methodical: unplug everything on the affected circuits, reset the switch, and reintroduce appliances one at a time until the culprit trips it, or, if it trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring. We do this testing properly and safely, then repair the faulty appliance connection, cable or circuit so the tripping stops for good.

Faulty appliances causing outages

A surprising number of home power outages are caused by a single faulty appliance. As appliances age or develop faults, they can leak current to earth or cause a short that trips your safety switch or breaker, cutting power to the circuit or the whole home. Common offenders include old kettles, toasters, heaters, washing machines, dishwashers and worn extension leads. The tell-tale sign is that power trips when a particular appliance is used or plugged in. We can help identify the faulty appliance through circuit testing, so you can repair or replace it, rather than living with mystery trips or blaming the wiring when an appliance is the real cause.

Power surges and your electronics

When power is restored after an outage, or during storms, surges can damage sensitive electronics and appliances. A surge is a brief spike in voltage that can fry circuit boards in TVs, computers, fridges and other equipment. To protect your home, we can install surge protection at the switchboard, which helps shield your whole electrical system, and recommend point-of-use surge protectors for valuable electronics. If you live in an area prone to storms or frequent outages, whole-home surge protection is a worthwhile investment that can save you far more than it costs in replaced appliances. We can assess your setup and advise on the right protection.

Recurring or intermittent outages

Power that cuts out repeatedly or intermittently is more than an annoyance, it is a sign of an underlying fault that will not fix itself and can be a safety risk. Intermittent faults are among the trickiest to diagnose because the problem comes and goes, but they often stem from a loose connection, a deteriorating cable, a failing appliance, or an overloaded circuit. Loose connections in particular can arc and generate heat, which is a fire risk. We use systematic fault-finding to track down intermittent problems rather than waiting for them to become constant, so a recurring outage is diagnosed and fixed before it causes damage or danger.

Our fault-finding process

Finding the cause of a power outage takes method, not guesswork. We start by establishing whether it is a supply or an internal fault, then work through the switchboard, circuits and connections. We isolate circuits to narrow down where the fault lies, test for earth leakage, shorts and loose connections, and check suspect appliances. Once we have pinpointed the cause, whether a faulty appliance, a damaged cable, a failed outlet, a tripping safety switch or a wiring fault, we repair it and test that power is restored safely and the protection works. This approach fixes the real problem, so you are not left with the same outage recurring.

When to call an emergency electrician

Some power problems warrant an urgent call: a burning smell, smoke or scorch marks at the switchboard or an outlet; sparking; a safety switch that will not reset and leaves you without power; exposed or damaged wiring; or a total loss of power on your side of the meter with no obvious cause. These can indicate a fire or shock hazard. In these cases, switch off the main switch if it is safe to do so, keep clear of the area, and call us. We provide fast emergency response and same-day attendance where we can, to make your home safe and restore power.

Backup power and being prepared

If outages are common in your area, or you rely on power for medical equipment, a home office or refrigerated stock, it is worth planning for backup. Options range from a simple portable generator with a proper changeover connection, to a home battery system paired with solar that can keep essential circuits running through a blackout. We can advise on and install the electrical infrastructure for backup power, including safe changeover switches so a generator never backfeeds the network, which is dangerous. Being prepared means an outage becomes a minor inconvenience rather than a disruption, and we can help you set up the right solution for your needs.

Licensed electricians for power problems

Diagnosing and fixing power outages on your side of the meter is licensed electrical work, and anything involving your main supply, switchboard or wiring should never be a DIY job. Our licensed electricians find the cause of partial and total outages, repair faults safely, restore power, and test that your safety devices work, all to the AS/NZS 3000 standard. You get fast response, same-day service where we can, upfront fixed pricing and honest advice on preventing future outages. For power problems, we cover Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, with emergency attendance available.

Power outage FAQs

Why has only one room lost power?

Usually a tripped safety switch or breaker, an overloaded circuit, or a faulty outlet or appliance on that circuit. An electrician can isolate the cause.

My safety switch keeps tripping. What do I do?

It is detecting a fault. Unplug appliances and reset once; if it trips again, stop resetting and call an electrician to find the fault.

Is the outage my problem or the power company’s?

If your neighbours are also out, it is the distributor’s network issue. If only your home is affected, it is an internal fault for an electrician.

What should I do if I smell burning?

Switch off the power at the board immediately and call a licensed electrician. Do not use the circuit until it is checked.

Why does my power trip when I use an appliance?

That appliance or its circuit likely has a fault, or the circuit is overloaded. We can test and repair the cause.

Can I fix a power fault myself?

You can reset a breaker once and unplug appliances, but locating and repairing wiring faults is licensed electrical work for a licensed electrician.

Do you offer emergency electrician service?

Yes. We answer calls 24 hours a day and treat power faults with burning smells or sparks as urgent across Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

How do you find the cause of an outage?

We use fault-finding equipment to test circuits and pinpoint the faulty wiring, outlet or appliance, then repair it safely.
