What causes a blocked kitchen sink

Kitchen sinks block more than any other drain in the house, and the cause is almost always what goes down them. The usual culprits are:

  • Fat, oil and grease poured down the drain, which cool and set hard on the pipe walls
  • Food scraps, especially rice, pasta, coffee grounds and vegetable peel
  • Soap scum building up over time and narrowing the pipe
  • Foreign objects washed in by accident
  • Tree roots or pipe damage further down the line

Grease is the biggest offender, because it coats the pipe and then traps everything else, slowly closing the drain until it blocks completely.

Why grease and fat are the main culprit

It is easy to think hot, liquid fat will simply flow away down the sink, but it does not. As it travels along the pipe it cools, thickens and sticks to the walls, and layer by layer it narrows the drain until water can barely pass. Worse, that sticky coating traps food scraps and soap scum, speeding up the blockage. This is why kitchen sinks that seem fine for months suddenly block. The fix is prevention: let fat cool and solid in the pan, then scrape it into the bin rather than rinsing it down the sink. Wiping greasy pans with paper towel before washing also helps a lot.

What you can try first

For a mild blockage, a few things are worth trying before you call:

  • Pour a kettle of hot (not boiling, to protect the pipes) water down to soften grease
  • Use a cup plunger over the plughole, with enough water to cover it, and plunge firmly
  • Try a mixture of bicarb soda followed by vinegar, left to fizz, then flushed with hot water
  • Check and clean the sink strainer and, if accessible, the P-trap under the sink

Avoid harsh chemical drain cleaners, which can damage pipes and are hazardous. If these do not clear it, stop and give us a call.

When to call a plumber

Call us if the sink will not drain after plunging, keeps blocking, drains very slowly, gurgles, or gives off a bad smell, or if water backs up into a second sink or the dishwasher. These point to a blockage deeper in the pipe that household methods will not reach. A sink that repeatedly blocks usually has a build-up well down the line, or a pipe problem, that needs professional equipment to clear properly. The longer it is left, the worse it gets, so it is better to call early than to keep battling a sink that drains slower every week.

How we clear a blocked kitchen sink

We do not just poke at the blockage, we clear it properly and find out why it happened. Depending on the job we use:

  • A drain machine (electric eel) to cut through and pull out the blockage
  • A high-pressure water jetter to scour grease and build-up right off the pipe walls
  • A CCTV drain camera to inspect the pipe and confirm the cause if it keeps happening

Jetting is especially effective on grease because it blasts the pipe clean rather than just punching a hole through the blockage, so it is far less likely to come straight back.

The P-trap and how it blocks

Under every kitchen sink is a U-shaped section of pipe called the P-trap. Its job is to hold a little water that seals out sewer gases and smells, but its shape also makes it the first place food, grease and objects get caught. A blocked P-trap is one of the most common kitchen sink problems, and sometimes clearing or cleaning it fixes the issue entirely. Our plumber will check the trap first, and if the blockage is further down the line, move to a drain machine or jetter. We also check the trap is correctly fitted and sealed, since a loose trap causes leaks and smells.

Blocked sink and your dishwasher

Your dishwasher usually drains into the same pipe as your kitchen sink, so a blockage there can cause the dishwasher to drain poorly, leave dirty water in the bottom, or even back up into the sink when it runs. If your dishwasher is not draining and your sink is slow, the two are almost certainly linked by a shared blockage. We clear the common pipe so both the sink and the dishwasher drain properly again, and check that the dishwasher connection and any air gap are correct, since a faulty connection can cause repeat problems.

Recurring blockages and tree roots

If your kitchen sink keeps blocking no matter how careful you are, the problem is usually a heavy grease build-up deep in the line, or damage and tree roots in the underground pipe. Roots are drawn to drains and grow in through cracks and joints, catching grease and scraps and causing repeat blockages. A camera inspection shows exactly what is happening, and we can jet the line clean, clear any roots, and if the pipe is damaged, repair it with no-dig pipe relining so the blockages stop for good rather than returning every few weeks.

How much does it cost to clear a blocked sink?

A simple kitchen sink blockage near the trap is an affordable job. Costs rise if the blockage is deep in the line, caused by heavy grease or tree roots, or needs a camera inspection and high-pressure jetter to clear fully. Emergency and after-hours call-outs cost more than a standard appointment. Rather than guess, we inspect the problem and give you an upfront fixed price before we start, so you know exactly what you are paying with no surprises on the invoice. If a repair like relining is the better long-term fix, we will quote that too so you can choose.

How to prevent blocked kitchen sinks

Most kitchen sink blockages are easy to prevent with a few habits: never pour fat, oil or grease down the sink, let it set and bin it instead; scrape plates into the bin before rinsing; use a sink strainer to catch food scraps; and run hot water down the drain after washing greasy dishes to help flush residue through. Avoid putting coffee grounds, rice and pasta down the sink, as they swell and clump. A periodic hot-water flush keeps grease from building up. These small steps save you the mess, smell and cost of a blocked sink.

Blocked sink or blocked drain?

If only your kitchen sink is slow or blocked, the problem is usually in the sink waste or the pipe nearby. If your sink, laundry, shower and other drains are all slow or backing up at the same time, the blockage is in the main drain or sewer line, which is a bigger job. Either way we can clear it. Our drain repair and camera services let us diagnose and fix the underlying cause, not just the blockage you can see, so you are not calling us back about the same drain a month later.

Smelly kitchen drains

A smelly kitchen sink usually comes from food and grease rotting in the pipe or trap, or from a dry or faulty trap letting sewer gas through. If your sink smells even when it is draining, the cause is often build-up coating the pipe. Clearing and jetting the line removes the rotting material and the smell with it. We also check the trap is holding water and correctly sealed. If the smell persists after cleaning, it can point to a venting problem, which we can investigate so your kitchen stays fresh.

Blocked kitchen sink FAQs

Why does my kitchen sink keep blocking?

Almost always grease and food scraps building up inside the pipe. If it keeps happening, there may be a sagging pipe or a deeper issue, which a camera inspection will find.

How do I unblock a kitchen sink?

Try hot water, a plunger, and cleaning the trap under the sink. If that does not work, or it keeps blocking, call a plumber.

Should I use a chemical drain cleaner?

We do not recommend it. Chemical cleaners can damage pipes, are bad for the environment, and rarely clear a solid grease blockage.

Can I pour grease down the sink if I run hot water?

No. The grease still cools and hardens further down the pipe. Let fat and oil cool and put them in the bin.

How do you clear a blocked kitchen sink?

We use a drain machine or high-pressure water jetter to clear grease and debris, and a camera inspection if the blockage keeps returning.

How much does it cost?

A simple clear is affordable; deeper or recurring blockages that need a jetter or camera cost more. We give you an upfront fixed price first.

Both sides of my double sink are blocked. Why?

That usually means the blockage is in the shared waste pipe past the trap, which needs a plumber to clear properly.

Do you offer same-day service?

Yes. We can usually clear a blocked kitchen sink the same day across Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.
